Why Haiti?

Ministries

Library Ministry

Haiti suffers from an average literacy rate of 60% (as compared to 92% in other Latin American countries).  Only half of Haiti’s children attend school, and nearly two-thirds of those students drop out of school prior to sixth grade. Haiti has the 5th highest food insecurity rate in the world with 22% of its children suffering from chronic malnutrition. Our library ministry offers students the academic help needed to succeed on their homework. We also start have started a meal program, where students who participate in our library ministry will be given a hot meal to ensure our kids are best equip to develop in every way. In addition, we dedicate time to learning key bible verses and applying them to real life.  We want kids to love Jesus and learning!

Trade Center Ministry

More than 2/3 of the labor force in Haiti does not have consistent employment and there are more than 200 active gangs across Haiti. The best chance they have at finding a job that will sustain them and their families is to learn a trade or service.  This is why we created the trade center ministry. We continue to encourage the learning of honest trades alongside the Gospel. We currently offer electricity, plumbing, French, ceramic tiling, and building construction classes. Originally, we thought that the trade center would mainly attract young men that were interested in joining or starting a gang to make a living. However, we were overwhelmed by the amount of people in our community that are eager to learn a skill while being in a spiritually uplifting and challenging environment.

Discipleship

This is the ministry that we didn’t see coming.  It began by discipling young men in our home as they transition into independence. We currently have five young men living in our home. Each has their own unique story of how they became a part of our family. Our goal is to disciple them to become men of God and follow His calling in their lives. While they are with us they have responsibilities in the house, ministry, and church.

Student Testimonials

“I want to tell all people who support the library, THANK YOU because it helps me learn my school lessons and I get to help the little kids with their work too!”

“Shelby and Jameson have become a mom and a dad to me. They have taught me many things from the Bible and they have changed my life a lot. I want to be an illustrator or author. I am trying to read ALL of the books in the library.”
