Why Haiti?
Shelby found herself in Haiti for the first time at 16 years old with no family missionary history, and no travel abroad experiences. One person’s canceled trip was the open door to a life ahead that only God knew. Haiti is a beautiful, Caribbean country that is impoverished economically due to generations of government corruption, and abuse of natural resources. What Haiti lacks in money, it makes up for in human ingenuity, incredible survival skills, and a lot of faith.

Ministries

Library Ministry
Haiti suffers from an average literacy rate of 60% (as compared to 92% in other Latin American countries). Only half of Haiti’s children attend school, and nearly two-thirds of those students drop out of school prior to sixth grade. Our library ministry offers students the academic help needed to succeed on their homework, while offering children a healthy environment to be creative with their friends. In addition, we dedicate time to learning key bible verses and applying them to real life. We want kids to love Jesus and learning!

Trade Center Ministry
The majority of people of working age in our community do not have fixed employment. Most people get by doing anything they can find to earn enough money to feed their family for the day. The best chance they have at finding a job that will sustain them and their families is to efficiently learn a trade or service. Originally, we thought that the trade center would mainly attract young men that were interested in joining or starting a gang to make a living. However, we were overwhelmed by the amount of people in our community that are eager to learn a skill while being in a spiritually uplifting and challenging environment.

Discipleship
This is the ministry that we didn’t see coming. It began by discipling young men in our home as they transition into independence. We currently have five young men living in our home. Each has their own unique story of how they became a part of our family. Our goal is to disciple them to become men of God and follow His calling in their lives. While they are with us they have responsibilities in the house, ministry, and church
Student Testimonials
“I want to tell all people who support the library, THANK YOU because it helps me learn my school lessons and I get to help the little kids with their work too!”
― Hope, Grade 4 student
“Shelby and Jameson have become a mom and a dad to me. They have taught me many things from the Bible and they have changed my life a lot. I want to be an illustrator or author. I am trying to read ALL of the books in the library.”
